Qatar: Sand, Sea and Sky:
A Must-Read to Understand Qatar
By Diane Untermeyer

Inspired by her sojourn in Qatar as the wife of the U.S. ambassador from 2004-2007, Diana Untermeyer spent the next four years traveling back to the emirate to create Qatar: Sand, Sea and Sky. This intimate portrait of Qatar explores how Qatar is using hydrocarbon wealth to play a leading role on the world stage despite of its small size. It also examines how its ancient culture and close links to the desert and the sea forge an exciting present and a wisely-laid path to the future. The author’s experiences in Qatar as an equestrian and community volunteer frame this well-researched account of a geographically and politically important nation that daily grapples with change while honoring the traditions of its rich past.

Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, daughter of the Emir who chairs Reach Out to Asia, the Qatar Museum Authority and the Doha Film Institute, writes in her introduction to the book, "The Qataris are privileged to have someone from across the ocean be so dedicated to us, our nation and all that we believe in. Diana has not only been a great ambassador of the USA to the region, but also she has been an equally incredible ambassador for the Qataris to the rest of the world."
